I want primarily to pick up EVPs in my investigations.  Yet, I am rather new at paranormal investigation.  What would be a good, light weight, easy to use, effective device?

theres two thoughts on this - some ( like me ) prefer the tape kind of recorder - in fact my best recordings come from a Sony mini DV camera.  But some like the convenience of digital recorders.

But heres a thought; you should have more than one so you can place them around the area, and that way you will know where they were when they were speaking.

Sony, Is my preference in anything. I have used all Sony for years with no problems, I use a Sony that I keep with me and have an MP3 player recorder that I keep in my dogs harness and when he is running around he picks up a lot. Good luck in whatever you choose.

I have had great success with my Olympus ws-100 model, I like it because you can wear headphones as you record, you can some times hear the replies during the evp session and you can tag outside noise contamination you would miss normally during  a session. Its real easy to upload to the computer with its built in usb plug.  Good luck on your choice and try several  types , once you get experienced you learn to have your own type and style to investigate with.
