EMF GENERATOR

So after watching a few episodes of Ghost Adventurers are the Travel Channel, I saw them using a unique device called an EMF Generator. The supposed purpose of said machine is to generate an EMF so that any spirt or entity can draw anergy from it and manifest it's self. My question for all of you is how and why does this work?
